A New Day at DZ Marketing

IMG_0494

In January of 2013, I had enough in savings to allow me to live modestly for six months. I was renting a one bedroom, 600 sq. ft apartment for $400 a month and on January 2nd I declared Beyond Marketing, LLC open for business. I had no clients or employees; I just had a passion and naiveté to think it may work out.

Since that day, we have grown and have been fortunate to work with some of the smallest to some of the largest skydiving brands in the world. We have added incredible employees and independent contractors who have been dynamic and essential to our company’s growth and culture. If there’s anything I’ve done right, it’s that I’ve hired people who are smarter than I and who specialize in different aspects of digital marketing.

Welcoming Melissa Nelson Lowe

The reason for my reflection is because of our newest employee that started with us on February 1st – Melissa Nelson Lowe. Melissa is arguably one of the most recognized names in the sport due to her lineage, history, and accomplishments in the sport. I wouldn’t have imagined that four years ago we’d have the opportunity to hire her. It feels surreal to have someone on our team so universally respected in the skydiving industry. Having Melissa on board certainly adds to our credibility, but her presence also adds to our culture and will challenge us to be better still.

What I’m most proud of is that we didn’t hire Melissa because of the recognition of her name or for her skills in the sky. We’ve hired her because of the person she is; high integrity, professionalism, kind spirit and a fierce competitor. The fact that she’s an excellent marketer and understands the sport and its people, is the added plus that makes her ideal for us.

What Melissa Will Be Doing With Us

Finding a title for someone who is multi-faceted like Melissa is difficult. Officially, Melissa will be our Customer Relationship Manager as she will be working one on one with many of our high touch clients both in a consulting role as well as implementing aspects of that customer’s marketing strategy. What few know about Melissa is she has done advanced social media work with companies in Silicon Valley, so we will be utilizing that skill for several of our clients.

Aside from day to day marketing, we want to give Melissa a platform to share all she’s learned from a lifetime in the sport. Melissa will be contributing to our monthly blog, speaking at skydiving association events and will consult with our clients to help with marketing, event management, and business administration. We will also be encouraging Melissa with her goals of future skydiving events that she’s dreaming of organizing.

It’s a new day, and we’re excited to have the force that is Melissa Lowe join our team. Today, we’re a stronger company, and we’re excited for what the future holds.
