News From the DZ Marketing Office


James La BarrieIt’s been a busy spring here at DropZone Marketing and we thought we’d catch you up on what’s happening internally with our team!

Firstly, we just celebrated our fourth year of business!

I can’t believe where the time has gone and how quickly we’ve grown, but it’s been a true adventure! Between full-time employees and contractors, our team has grown to 15 amazing people. I have surrounded myself with people much smarter than myself and I know our clients are benefitting from their expertise.


Following the holidays, January got off to a quick start with me traveling to the UK to attend and present at the British Parachute Association’s, Skydive the Expo event. My mother is originally from England and I was also able to visit with some family who I had not seen in over 25 years. It was a fulfilling visit both personally and professionally.


February brought the addition of Melissa Nelson Lowe to our team which included me visiting Moab, Utah for several days to onboard Melissa. Two weeks later, the team came together in Chattanooga for the PIA Symposium which felt like a reunion and trade show combined into one; it was so good seeing so many friends met through the years.

We left PIA gritting our teeth in celebration for gaining new clients, but also recognizing the real work was to begin. As soon as we got back to the office, we knew it was time to execute and we’ve been quite busy since (happily). As you’ll see below, we’ve also been attending several continuing education conferences to make sure our team is on top of the marketing game.

March was literally March Madness. We added five new team members to our team (to be formally introduced next month): Hillary, Adam, Sarah, Patrick and Erica! So, there’s been lot’s of onboarding and planning meetings in preparation for the year ahead. With the addition of our teammates, training, beginning new client accounts, finishing up web designs… it was a crazy month of very long days!


The season is officially on and we’re actively working with our clients to get things off to a positive start. I couldn’t be happier and look forward to the marketing challenges and victories ahead!

Continuing Education

MozCon Local | February 27-28

If there’s anything we’ve learned, it’s that marketing in the digital space is continually changing, especially in the world of SEO. To ensure we’re at the top of our games, we invest heavily in continuing education.

Earlier this spring, two of our team members attended MozCon Local in Seattle, Washington. Marcella Smith and Melissa Harper spent two full days learning from the thought leaders in the SEO space. They came away excited to execute the latest techniques in search optimization. What’s amazing is how much SEO has changed in less than a year!

Social Media Marketing World | Mar 22-24

Melissa Nelson Lowe journeyed to San Diego to attend one of the world’s largest social media conferences – Social Media Marketing World.

Melisssa and 3,000 other marketers from around the world listened and learned from today’s social media thought leaders on the latest trends and effective social strategies for business today. Melissa even met a few of her social media heroes!

Marketing United | April 19-21

Last week, James La Barrie (me) attended Marketing United in Nashville, TN. This is his third time attending the conference which is rich with speakers covering topics from content marketing, e-mail marketing, and analytics.


This is one of my favorite conferences of the year as it’s relatively small and allows me to get the questions I have, answered. This year was no different!


Melissa Nelson Lowe To Release Sugar Alpha Vol 2

Writing a book is a major undertaking and this has been a project that Melissa has been working on for quite some time… the release of Sugar Alpha Volume 2 and Volume 3. I read Sugar Alpha a few years ago and loved it.

Unfortunately, I never met Roger Nelson, but learning about this complex and charismatic man was a fascinating journey and I can’t wait to learn more about him and his adventures in Melissa’s next book. To help fund the project, Melissa has launched a crowdfunding campaign via Indiegogo and we are proudly spreading the word on this awesome project. IMG_0532It seemed that our newest employee really wanted to work for us as she kept coming by the office every day looking through our window with pathetic eyes. After a week of pulling at our heartstrings, we adopted our newly minted employee and office cat – Katze. For those that don’t know, Katze is German for the word, cat. We didn’t know what to call her, so we started calling her ‘Katze’ while we tried to figure out what her name would be, and sure enough the name stuck.

She’s lousy at SEO, but she offers stress relief when we’ve been sitting at our computers for too long!
